E. General Outreach: Community Groups
When job openings occur, the Spokane Public Radio Station Employment Unit provides job opening announcements to a significant number of community groups and industry entities which have minority or female members, as indicated above on the Spokane Public Radio Employment Opportunity List.

F. Outreach Initiatives, October 1, 2007 September 30, 2008
Spokane Public Radio has more than 10 employees. Under the FCC’s EEO rules, it is responsible for engaging in at least four outreach activities in every two-year period. The activities listed here when added to activities it in which it engaged during the 2006-2007 license year, comprise a total of six Outreach Activities which comply with the rules. The Volunteer Program has been in existence for many years and, therefore, could have been credited towards last year’s Outreach Activities as well. University classes, (ex. Gonzaga, Summer Session 2008) are invited to tour our facility and participate in discussions led by news staff, the program director and general manager.

(1) Internship Program
Spokane Public Radio has an active internship program. Local colleges and universities whose students participated in the program this past year include Spokane Falls Community College, Gonzaga and Eastern Washington University. Additionally, we recruit and train interns from area high schools and the community at large, including from our volunteer program. During the period from October 1, 2007 to September 30, 2008 SPR had numerous interns and provided classroom space and material for university coursework (see below):

Krys Brezynski, community intern, and student at Gonzaga University- is beginning work with sound editing, and will soon be working with the in-house production the Bookshelf.  Krys works with Nancy Roth and Verne Windham. She began in September and has plans to continue through the school year.

Robert Marll, community intern. Well versed in IT, Robert spent most of his intern hours, approximately 8- 10 hrs a week, from November 2007-June 2008, working with webpage development and software creation and troubleshooting.  Robert also worked diligently to convert audio and uploading into our first podcasts.  As a result of his knowledge and skill Robert transitioned into a part-time staff member.  As of July 2008 he works as IT Specialist.

Steven Myers, community intern. Mr. Myers has increased his working hours to 12 per week archiving programs, for community producers and the Bookshelf.  Starting in July of 2006, Steve has continued to improve his talent for sound editing.  He works for both Nancy Roth and Verne Windham.  been working 12 hours a week archiving programs. He is beginning work with sound editing, and will soon be working for the Bookshelf. He works with Nancy Roth and Verne Windham.

Mike Wiebers, community intern.  Currently interning as librarian, Mr. Wiebers has expanded his activities to at least 35 hours a week. He continues to maintain and reinvent our library database as the collection changes over time.  Mike has continued to produce his summer program Short and Sweet which aired in the summer of 2008.  He is supervised by program director Verne Windham

Intern Course Work/Eastern Washington University English 404, Software Documentation, 40 hours- the task of the class was to create a software manual for station use.  The students were supervised by Dr. Anthony Flynn- EWU, and Nancy Roth.

The overall supervision for all internships is provided by Dick Kunkel, general manager.

(2) Job Fair/Open House
On December 3, 2007, Spokane Public Radio held its annual Job Fair/Open House at the station. This event brings community members in to the station to find out about station operations; to meet staff and Board members; and to discuss station needs, as well as what we do and how we do it. Our goal is three fold- 1) to help our community understand radio, 2) to welcome and take note of listener advice on our performance, and 3) to interest potential job applicants or interns who might be interested in careers in public broadcasting, openings at the station, or internships, and who wish to talk with the people who might hire them or recruit them as interns to work at the station. Richard Kunkel, General Manager of KPBX, is in charge of the Open House, but all station staff members participate.

(3) Job Vacancy Announcements to Groups with Significant Minority and Female Membership
Because the demographics of the Spokane, Washington area include a relatively-small percentage of minority group members, Spokane Public Radio committed itself several years ago to notifying the following industry and professional organizations whose membership includes minority and female members about all upper-level and professional job vacancies, and posting such information on the career web site/bulletin boards of those organizations which provided such a service. In addition to the extensive job site of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which all candidates for public radio jobs, including minority group members and women, are likely to consult, Spokane Public Radio will send notification to these entities, and all other organizations on its Employment Opportunity List:

Hispanics in Public Radio
National Asian-American Telecommunications Association
Pacific Islanders in Communications
Gays & Lesbians in Public Radio
American Women in Radio and Television, Inc.
Asian American Journalists Association (reporter and news positions only)
Indigenous Communications Association
National Association of Black Journalists (reporter and news positions only)
National Association of Hispanic Journalists (reporter and news positions only)

(For more information on these agencies please refer to the Recruitment/Referral section on page 1)

While it is difficult to test the effectiveness of this activity in recruiting candidates, station management has decided to keep these organizations on the Employment Opportunity List for the indefinite future. With respect to this list, please note that addresses are provided for those groups and organizations who have asked Spokane Public Radio to notify them by mail, and fax numbers are listed for those groups and organizations which have asked to be notified by fax. The list does not contain the names of contact persons because several participating groups have asked Spokane Public Radio not to use a specific contact name because the contact person changes frequently at many such groups, leading to a potential source of confusion for the person sorting the mail or faxes.

(4) Volunteer Program
In addition to community interns, Spokane Public Radio has a very large (250 to 325 people) group of volunteers, and actively recruits volunteers from the local community on an on-going basis. The licensee has found that its volunteer program, together with the hands-on training that volunteers receive, provides a diverse and talented pool of applicants from the local community when job openings arise at the stations, as demonstrated by the hiring of community intern Robert Marll and devoted volunteer Julie Bookstrom. A Volunteer Recruitment Page is a prominent part of the Spokane Public Radio web site. Volunteer activities at Spokane Public Radio are coordinated by Stephanie Ingoldby, the SPR Volunteer Coordinator.
